Abstract units. Treat them as metres, feet, or centimetres as long as every input uses the same unit. Volume is then in cubic units of that system.

Does surface area include the base?

Yes for closed solids (box, cylinder with caps, sphere, cone with base, pyramid with base, frustum with both ends). Lateral area is listed separately when it is useful.

How do tank fill volumes work?

Fill height sets a liquid level inside the tank. Fill volume uses that height; capacity is the full tank. Fill % is fill volume divided by capacity.

Can I export a 3D model?

Not yet. Use the stage to understand proportions, then note the dimensions for CAD or a shopping list.

Why is the preview slow on my phone?

The stage uses WebGL with shadows and an environment map. Turn off auto-rotate, or use a smaller window, if a device struggles.

What this tool does

Solid Lab is a 3D volume and surface area calculator for boxes, cylinders, spheres, cones, square pyramids, conical frustums, and practical tanks. You pick a solid, adjust dimensions, and orbit a morphing model while the metrics update live.

Tank modes add a glass shell and liquid fill so capacity versus filled volume is visible, not only printed as a percentage.

Static volume tables and chat answers can list the same formulas. This tool is built for seeing the solid change in space: height, radius, slant, and fill level stay attached to the model.

Everything runs in your browser. Use abstract units for study work, or treat them as metres, feet, or centimetres as long as you stay consistent.

How to use it

1Choose a solid from Basics, Pointed, or Tanks.
2Adjust the dimension fields (length, width, height, radius, base, or fill height).
3Orbit the 3D stage with drag, and zoom with the scroll wheel.
4Read volume and surface area in the stats row; note slant or lateral area when shown.
5For tanks, move the fill height slider and compare fill volume to capacity.
6Toggle auto-rotate if you want a slow turntable view.
7Use the same unit system for every input when you convert results to a real project.

Practical tips

Cone and frustum slant length is the side distance along the outer surface, not the vertical height.
Pyramid mode uses a square base; lateral area is the four triangular faces.
Tank fill cannot exceed height. Lower the fill slider after you reduce tank height if needed.
Studio lighting and the environment map need a network load the first time; the math still works if the HDRI fails to load.
